Course Description

The purpose of this course is to discuss the concept of hoarding among people who experience homelessness and housing instability. Throughout this course, we will discuss what hoarding means, provide a brief overview of homelessness and housing instability, discuss why hoarding is a significant concern when working with people who are unhoused or unstably housed, and share some tips and strategies on how to work with individuals who may be in this situation. We will also share people’s personal experiences with managing their possessions while homeless or unstably housed and the experiences of those who work with people experiencing homelessness. Lastly, this course includes journal questions throughout the sections and a brief quiz at the end.

Course Learning Objectives
- Recognize the symptoms of hoarding behavior and hoarding disorder
- Identify how hoarding disorder may lead to housing instability or homelessness
- Name at least three strategies for supporting people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness with hoarding disorder
Format
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to respond to journal prompts and reflect on the information provided to identify key takeaways that you will use in your practice. There is a post-test at the end of the course, which must be passed with an 80 percent score in order to complete the course. You have an unlimited number of attempts for this post-test. All activities are required to complete the course successfully.
Time Management
This course is self-paced, and you can start and stop as you wish. We estimate the course will take 1.5 hours to complete.
Continuing Education Units
This course is approved for 1.5 CEUs from the National Association of Social Workers.
